Intelligent Light is excited to announce that the FieldView 16.1 release is ready for download.

Our FieldView 16.1 Update delivers dozens of major and minor improvements based on customer requests. We focused on the biggest little problems reported by our users, to deliver benefits to every user, because little problems are not little if they get in the way of your productivity.

As part of our development process we invited users who made feature requests to be part of our team. We spoke with them early in the design stage and then included them in the testing to be sure the new features met their needs.

Thanks to this mutual effort, FieldView 16.1 has the largest number of fulfilled feature requests and resolved issues in years. All FieldView users will benefit as there really is something for everyone in FieldView 16.1. Whether that's the new lightweight high-quality video export with control for frame rate, the easy way to flip which axis is up when using a predefined view, the logarithmic scale for colormaps with its "powers of ten" annotations, or one of the dozens of other improvements. Check the full list on the What's New in FieldView 16.1 document.

And because more and more users are adopting our extract based workflow ideas, we keep going further with features like the new VTK reader and a surface-based sampling method.

User input is a cornerstone of our support and product development. It feels really good to be able to deliver on so many common feature requests with this update. Beyond the feature requests, the input of users in our development process was incredibly valuable. It was fantastic to see how quickly users could experience a new capability and immediately give us feedback on changes and additions that would make it even more useful in day to day engineering.

Finally, to make it even easier for you, FieldView 16.1 will run with your FieldView 16 passwords.

FieldView 16 and XDBview 2 Now Available

3D PDF export generated in FieldView and seen in Adobe Acrobat Reader® (left) and on a tablet (right). (DrivAer geometry courtesy of TU München, Mesh and simulation by VINAS with Pointwise and Helyx).

3D PDF export, faster data read, reduced memory usage and many more improvements

Just a little less than a year has passed by since our release of FieldView 15 and I am happy to announce that our new version, FieldView 16, is ready for download. While software users sometimes feel like installing a new version is not going to impact them much, I am confident that every single FieldView user will benefit from this release.

You will find that FieldView 16 is faster to read your data than previous versions and will also use less memory. Data read can easily be made even faster and more memory efficient by selecting the right Data Input option. When you don't need to perform Dataset Sampling or to compute a lot of streamlines, select "Less" Grid Processing for faster data input. In cases when you do need that kind of performance, select "More" right from the Data Input panel and you will use more memory to get better performance during you session.

FieldView 16 is the first CFD post-processor to introduce a built-in 3D PDF export. This standard format is a great way to present and share your results, allowing interactive exploration via rotation, zooming, panning and commenting in Adobe Acrobat Reader and in 3D PDF viewer apps.

Other highlights of this release include:

  • New Vertices and Shaded Vertices display types for better insight and fast performance
  • The ability to sweep surfaces coming from an XDB extract and to synchronize this operation between multiple datasets for easy animations and side-by-side comparison
  • More control over the location of Surface Flows
  • A new Growing display type for pathlines animation
  • 10x faster read times for AcuSolve users, compared to FieldView 15
  • The ability to read single-file transient data as steady-state
  • Support for results from FLOW-3D v11

We're also introducing the second version of XDBview. Our free, sharable viewer for XDB extracts, now includes the same sweep capability as FieldView 16 and can now read your CAD geometries in STL format.

To learn more about these new versions, I encourage you to read our What's New in FieldView 16 document (Japanese version).

FieldView 16 is a major release. You will need to request new passwords from Intelligent Light. FieldView 16 passwords will work for both version 15 and 16, but as of this release FieldView version 14 and earlier are no longer supported. If you need to test FieldView 16 with your data or workflows before upgrading, feel free to request additional temporary passwords and we'll be happy to provide them free of charge.

Please contact our FieldView Support Team  or your account manager for more information.

FieldView Patch Release 15.1 Now Available

New Surface Flows seeding option, improved readers, growing pathlines and many more improvements

Surface Flows obtained with the new “From File” seeding option

The FieldView Development Team has been working hard on great new capabilities for FieldView 16, coming this fall. We’re halfway through our yearly release cycle: the perfect time to step back and package all the new capabilities and improvements already available so you can benefit from them now.

Our recently adopted Agile development method allows us to deliver this patch release quickly so we can spend more time working on FieldView 16.  Only some of the files in your FieldView 15 installation will be updated in the process. Our next full installation package will come with FieldView 16, which will be a new major release of the type our users are more familiar with.

Highlights of this patch release are:

  • More control over the location of Surface Flow lines with the new “From File” seeding option.
  • 4x faster read times for the AcuSolve Direct Reader.
  • Parallel post-processing and support for FLOW-3D v11 with the FLOW-3D Direct Reader.
  • Animate the full path followed by your particles over time, even in moving grids, with the new “Growing” display type for particles.
  • Save time on particle animation by reading a single time step and animating only your particles with the new “Read as Steady State” option for single-file transient results.
  • Increased maximum parallel partitions count.
  • Changing grid counts in PLOT3D Function files during transient sweep.
  • A more verbose mode for debugging corrupted arbitrary polyhedra from your solver export.
  • And over 20 additional fixes and improvements…

Check out the full details in the What's New in FieldView Patch Release 15.1 document.

The FieldView patch release 15.1 is an upgrade to your FieldView 15 installation. It will run with your current FieldView 15 passwords. It is available for download from the FieldView Customer Center.

ANSYS® Fluent® 16.0 Enables FieldView HPC Capabilities

FieldView Parallel Export from ANSYS® Fluent® 16.0

ANSYS Fluent 16.0 provides the capability to export results to FV-UNS while maintaining the partitioning established for a FLUENT parallel solution.  The file is fully compatible with FieldView Parallel allowing for the substantial time savings from parallel processing.  Every FieldView license will support at least 8 processor cores.  FieldView Parallel will readily scale to 64 processors and beyond.  The export files can be automatically generated during the solver run.

Surface Export - From the ANSYS Fluent TUI a new option called “fieldview-unstruct-surfaces” creates a surface only FV-UNS export, where the user selects the exported surfaces from a list of boundary conditions and post-processing surfaces (iso-surfaces, planes…).

  • Surface export for Parallel FieldView - A surface export made from a parallel session of Fluent will maintain the partitioning of the surfaces, and the resulting file can thus be read in parallel by FieldView.

  • Interior surfaces may be selected for export in Fluent 16.0.  This is a longstanding request and is useful in applications like integrating flow rate or seeding streamlines on control surfaces.  Please contact our support team for information about how to use this new feature.

FieldView and FLUENT - Power for Unsteady Simulations

Unsteady simulations are often post-processed and reviewed using FieldView XDB files which are a fraction of the size of volume data.  Exporting surface data, reading into FieldView Parallel and then having FieldView post-process and produce XDB files can be entirely automated.  This workflow delivers lightweight XDB files for review in FieldView or by the free XDBview reader. When exporting from ANSYS FLUENT, the resulting file can be read into FieldView in parallel, dramatically reducing the read-in time.

FieldView 15 Preview

The latest release of FieldView, Version 15, is coming in late October.  This is the first FieldView release created under our Agile development process.  Participating users have seen their requests implemented in prototypes along the way and are already seeing benefits.

Among the improvements coming in the new release:

  • Increased performance and control over extract generation (XDBs), with the new option to retain thresholds from FieldView through to the XDB file.

  • An improved reader for OpenFOAM data which will allow the computation of more accurate iso-surfaces at the border between partitions.

  • Introduction of XDBView, a new standalone viewer for FieldView XDBs which is open licensed and can be freely shared among colleagues.

  • Easier access to about 50 colormaps and user defined ones straight from the interface.

  • Resolution of a bug related to the 3D mouse support improves performance for users without 3D mouse tools.

  • For users rendering very large surfaces, FieldView 15 will reduce the memory footprint while maintaining a very good level of performance.

FieldView 15 will address many more feature requests and improvements.  Stay tuned for more details as the release nears.

Our FieldView 15 Beta program will commence soon.  Please contact your sales or support rep if you would like to be included in the beta program.
