Prof. Schmitz initial wind turbine

Prof. Sven Schmitz and his students are using OpenFOAM and FieldView to study wind turbine wake structures. I just helped them get FieldView up and running on up to 32 CORES in both Client/Server mode and in Batch mode on their HPC cluster Cocoa.  The simulations totaled 15 million grid points, 416 grids with 50 scalar and 8 vector quantities - EACH TIME STEP.  Running FieldView in batch mode with 16 shared memory cores on 1 compute node, it took about 6 minutes per time step to read the data, create coordinate cut planes and iso-surfaces of vorticity, then output data extracts (XDB), movies and pictures.  I'll be working with Prof. Schmitz's students on using this custom XDB workflow to make a movie for the ‘Gallery of Fluid Motion’ for the APS Division of Fluid Dynamics.
