Infiniti Red Bull Racing - Formula 1 Domination in 2013

CFD Team Leader, Nathan Sykes talks about where the challenges and achievements of his team using FieldView and automated CFD post-processing.

 

Infiniti Red Bull Formula 1 - An elite team in Formula 1 Racing
After claiming the Constructor's and Driver's Championship for four straight years, the Red Bull's are a favorite at every race they contest.

Domination in 2013:

  • Red Bull's 596 total points was well clear of Mercedes’ 360 and Ferrari’s 354 points

  • Vettel’s total of 13 wins during the season puts him alongside Michael Schumacher as joint holder of the record for most wins in a single campaign.

  • 13 additional podiums

  • Red Bull finished the season with 9 consecutive wins and a fourth 1-2 finish at the final race.


A team built upon great engineering and great driving brings the fastest cars on the track that were designed with heavy use of CFD and a model high-productivity workflow. ANSYS® Fluent™ 15 Released with New Parallel Export for FieldView

ANSYS® Fluent™ 15 has been released and introduces a new parallel compatible FVUNS export for FieldView. We recommend that this export be used as the default for all ANSYS Fluent datasets as it will result in dramatic performance increases. Performance increases of 5x on 8 cores are typical and this performance boost comes at no cost to FieldView users.

FieldView 14 standard licenses support use of up to 8 processor cores per dataset. For HPC users, additional scalability (32, 64, or unlimited cores) is available at moderate additional cost. Run FieldView on a local system, on-site or cloud-based server, even across virtualized resources all standard and with maximum performance.

The export is available from the FLUENT Text User Interface (TUI). Simple instructions are available from IL support.

Impact - IDC awards IL 2nd HPC Innovation Excellence Award

IDC recognized Intelligent Light during SC13 in Denver, CO for the use of HPC to generate and analyze vast amounts of CFD without workflow limitations using readily available, standard software and hardware.

The approach allowed hundreds of cases and terabytes of data to be evaluated and utilized under a restrictive schedule using:

  • CFD Data Management using tools in FieldView

  • Engineered CFD workflows by Intelligent Light

  • HPC on remote Cray XE6

Intelligent Light addressed the challenge of high volumes of CFD data using FieldView 14 data management and process automation tools. Intelligent Light contributed results from approximately 100 cases with more than 10,000 time steps each to deliver a complete response to the workshop objectives. A Cray XE6 was used to generate the CFD solutions and perform much of the post-processing. Terabytes of data were created, evaluated, and compared to experimental data by a single researcher working part-time. This project successfully demonstrated the value and practicality of using innovative workflow engineering with automation and data management for complex CFD studies.

The program's main goals are: to showcase return on investment (ROI) and scientific innovation success stories involving HPC; to help other users better understand the benefits of adopting HPC and justify HPC investments, especially for small and medium-size businesses (SMBs); to demonstrate the value of HPC to funding bodies and politicians; and to expand public support for increased HPC investments.
