Taming the big data monster! - CFD data management using FieldView produces faster results, smaller files and vastly improved productivity

FieldView addresses the data management with a workflow designed around specialized CFD extract databases that contain the essential data for post-processing, evaluation, and archiving. Far smaller and more agile than volume data, these datasets enable higher productivity at every step of the CFD workflow. Benefits include faster interaction, easier collaboration, faster queries and calculations, smaller files & disk requirements, and more.

To start, consider the typical CFD workflow:

Typical CFD Workflow

Each time the CFD data is to be worked with, the entire dataset must be loaded in. With full sized CFD solution data, read-in times are long and this time is repeated every time the dataset is retrieved for a new session. When FieldView creates FieldView XDB files with the information that they will require packaged in, the files are a fraction of the size. Thus, when read into FieldView, the read times are short and calculations are fast. FieldView treats these XDB files just like any other dataset so they can be read-in, appended, and compared to any other datasets.

The benefits are even greater for transient data as the volume of data increases. Since the datasets are used natively within FieldView, unsteady time sequences can be merged to retain temporal fidelity and datasets can be sampled and then extrapolated.

Once the workflow has been established and FieldView XDB files are being produced with the desired data, the entire process can be automated for maximum productivity. An optimized workflow will run the post-processing in batch mode where the simulation is run. Multiple datasets or timesteps can be run simultaneously using FieldView batch packs, while FieldView Parallel allows multi-grid jobs to be turned around quickly using scalable systems.

After the batch job is run, interactive quantitative and qualitative post-processing can be done on one or multiple XDB files and the combined result can be saved as a new XDB file. Time and disk space are saved all the way through the process. Users can return to any working session quickly reading in archived XDB files without delay.
